What is Stereo or Hi-Fi?

While experimented with (with some success) during late 1800's and early 1900's, it wasn't until the last 1950's we saw the first stereoscopic format enter our homes.
2-channels of audio information or Stereo, offered a more realistic spacial experience but it wasn't 'Hi-Fi'. The Hi-Fidelity or Hi-Fi era started around the mid-60's and simply meant a higher quality of sound reproduction approaching (as close as technically possible) the original source material.
While concept hasn't changed, the evolution of source material (and delivery) and advances in equipment means we can now experience sound a lot closer to the source than ever before.
That said, not all Hi-Fi is equal, and unfortunately if you desire the best sound experience you will pay a premium.
Regardless of the source, a Hi-Fi system has a simple elegance, which makes perfect sense when you remember that most of us have 2 ears.
